Farmers Market Organizers Think Big for This Summer's Events

Organizers hope the Port Washington Farmers Market will look more like a community festival in the city's downtown each week; one big change attendees should take note of is the hours will move later.

The kicks off on Saturday for its summer season, and event organizers have expanded the market — adding more space, entertainment and vendors.

"We're trying to turn this into more of a community event — as opposed to a shop and leave (event)," organizers said.

The market will also include more hot food for sale, as well as seating — so that attendees can enjoy a snack while listening to music and also enjoying the other sights at the fest.

The event will still be held on Main Street, but instead of ending at Franklin Street, it will expand across the road and end in the cul-de-sac where  is located.

Market-goers should also make note: though the event had usually run from 8 a.m. until noon, this year it will run from 9 a.m. until 1 p.m. each Saturday.

Saturday's event will include a large number of vendors, selling the following products: doll clothes and jewelry, wood crafts, dog and cat products and nail trims, flowers, baked goods, coffee, herbal soap, hand stitched pillows, apples, cherries, and other locally grown produce; one vendor will also be selling small menu of food choices, including egg rolls, and will also have booth.

Music on Saturday will be provided by Dockside Ramblers, who will also appear for the Aug. 4 market. Roller Mills String Band will be playing July 7, Sept. 15 and Oct. 6.

Organizers are still looking for civic groups or local businesses to host the event on occasional Saturdays throughout the summer. Hosting involves helping vendors with setup and manning the Port Washington Main Street booth — selling t-shirts and other items. As a host, the business or group is also allowed to promote their own cause at the booth. Any one interested in hosting the Farmers Market or being a vendor can contact the Farmers Market at 262-235-0575.
