Car Thefts Continue Despite Last Week's Arrests

Items were stolen from several vehicles just days after the arrest of two men in connection with some of the thefts.

Despite arrests made last week in connection with thefts from vehicles in Port Washington, the incidents continue in the city.

While parked at Lower Lake Park, an 18-year-old woman reported to the Port Washington Police department at 7:47 p.m. Thursday that her purse was stolen from her friend's unlocked vehicle, according to police reports.

A 59-year-old Port man called police at 3:35 p.m. Friday to report his GPS stolen from his unlocked vehicle parked in the driveway at his house in the 1500 block of Scott Road, according to the reports.

At 5:02 p.m. Friday, a 60-year-old called to report several items stolen from his vehicle and to find out whether the department may have recovered them, according to reports. Police did not have any of the items in the department's inventory, and a report was filed.

Despite the arrests last week, Police Chief Kevin Hingiss had still warned residents to be sure to lock their car doors.

"Although it is our hope that these arrests will see an end to these vehicle thefts, we ask the public to remain vigilant," Hingiss said. "We would also like to remind our citizens to remember to lock their doors and remove valuable items from their vehicles. Our community is a safe community, but these crimes are crimes of opportunity, and that opportunity dries up quickly with locked doors and nothing to steal."
