Port Police Chiefs Say 'Goodbye,' 'Hello'

Lt. Mike Davel named Captain of Operations during ceremony to welcome new chief Kevin Hingiss and to celebrate the career of retiring Police Chief Richard Thomas.

Retiring Port Police Chief Richard Thomas and new Chief Kevin Hingiss exchanged hands on Tuesday during what was an emotional ceremony for many involved.

"We want you all to know that you witnessed something very unique here today," Police and Fire Commision Chair Rick Nelson said to the audience, which was standing-room-only in the department's community room.

"Chief Thomas was actually speechless."

Thomas is retiring after working 6 1/2 years as the Port Washington Police Chief, and Hingiss takes the position .

Lt. Mike Davel, , was promoted to become captain of operations as part of a restructuring of the department by Hingiss. The change is effective Jan. 1, the same day Hingiss officially becomes the new chief. Mike Keller will remain captain of administration.
