Teen Arrested After Entering 3 Cars Over Weekend

Port Washington Police Department still investigating whether the 16-year-old Port Washington man has any connection to a string of thefts from vehicles in the city this summer.

A 16-year-old Port Washington boy was arrested on Saturday after the theft of a pair of sunglasses from a vehicle on Friday night led to him.

The theft victim's son is a student and saw the suspect enter the vehicle on Friday night in the 200 block of West Theis Street, according to Port Washington Police Chief Richard Thomas.

The arrest comes after a long search for a suspect or suspects responsible for and worth a total loss of more than $7,000 since May. Thomas said it is not clear whether the teen is connected with those thefts.

"The case did not lead us to him being responsible for any of the other thefts," Thomas said,"(but) that’s still being investigated and considered."

The 16-year-old admitted to the theft and also entering two other vehicles. He also admitted to being intoxicated on Friday night and so he could not recall the location of the other two vehicles, though he did say he did not steal anything other than the sunglasses. He was cited for the underage drinking, and juvenile charges for entering the vehicles have been filed.

The teen was wearing all black on Friday night when he entered the vehicles. A search of his house did not reveal any of the missing items from the previous string of thefts this summer, but Thomas is hopeful continued investigation of the teen's possible involvement will lead to finding other people involved.
