Grothman: 'Appalled' by the Idea of 'Penalizing' Marriage

Sen. Glenn Grothman is opposing proposed changes to school voucher programs based on the potential impact on marriage.

Families are currently eligible for the school voucher program when they make 300 percent of the federal poverty income level; the proposed changes would drop this level to 185 percent.

"I am appalled that the neogiators may be putting a huge marriage penality on this program," Grothman said. "(If we) based it on 185 percent of federal poverty, it makes it almost impossible for a married woman to be eligible for the program, but single parents will frequently be eligible for the program."

Grothman has made his opinions on marriage made before, proposing a controversial bill that considered nonmarital parenthood a contributing factor to child abuse in early March.

You can read more about his stance in a newsletter he published regarding his belief that the breakdown of the family is America's biggest problem.
