Port Adds 15-Person Marketing, Communications Committee

The new committee will work to create a "three-to-five year plan to serve as a guide for the city's marketing and communications efforts," and will include local business, school district and resident representatives as well as city officials.

Port Washington is one committee stronger after the council took steps on Tuesday night to form a group .

Port Washington Mayor Tom Mlada outlined the specifics for new the Marketing and Communications Committee, which will focus on: the city website; social media; city newsletter and other print publications; establishment of resident e-mail database; electronic publications; and video and audio work.

"This committee ... would bring forth specific recommendations for enhancement related to the focus areas below and any other area that membership would deem appropriate and/or neccesary," Mlada's proposal said. "Additionally, the committee would be charged with the creation of a dynamic, actionable, measurable three-to-five year plan to serve as a guide for the city's marketing and communications efforts."

The entire committee is to be comprised of 15 people, including representatives from a variety of other committees as well as local business, school district and resident representatives.

While Ald. Jim Vollmar worried about such a big group focusing its efforts enough to get anything accomplished, other alderman were quick to suggest that the size of the group merely reflects the range of tasks the committee can take on.

"I think with a committee that is so all encompassing ... the opportunity for sub-committees seems to be fairly great," Ald. Doug Biggs said, adding he feels its important all areas of the city be represented.

"I agree," Ald. Dan Becker said. "Because you’re asking a lot of folks to get involved and they’re all going to have something to offer … I have no problem starting at this point and (its size) can be analyzed as we go along."

Mlada, who , said 15 was actually a hard number to hit.

"Personally, I struggled to even keep it to 15, because there’s (such a broad group) … but I do think that would be a workable number with that committee," he said.

The council to the city, but Mlada said he has a few ideas to work out before presenting the council with a more specific plan at its June 6 meeting.
