Port School District Pays Off $2.6M Referendum Debt

School officials say the lack of referendum debt puts the district in a unique position compared to others in the state.

The Port Washington-Saukville School Board has announced that the district is officially free of referendum debt.

The district borrowed the $2.6 million just nine years ago, and made its last payment of $465,000 earlier this month.

"The district no longer has any longterm referendum debt, which is a pretty special situation (compared to elsewhere in the state)," District Director of Business Services Jim Froemming said. "To be out of (debt) so quickly really shows the fiscal responsibility. It gives us options and choices for the future, and that’s always a good thing.”
